3rd grade Author Visit with Jon Muth is Friday, May 6th!

Next Friday our 3rd grade students will have the privilege of hearing author and illustrator Jon Muth talk about his work.  This is an exciting opportunity provided to our school through Scholastic Book Fairs.  Mrs. Welsh and the classroom teachers are helping the students prepare for his visit through the study of his books.

Jon is an award winning author and illustrator of many books.  For more information about him please see our library website for details.  http://www.ih.k12.oh.us/esmedia/Muth_Illustrator_Visit.htm

We are able to make the following books for sale.  Jon will autograph books as time allows.  Since he must leave our school for another engagement he may autograph bookplates for insertion in your book.

   The Three Questions.                                                   Paperback $4.95

Despite major changes, Muth has retained the essence of Tolstoy's philosophical tale about a czar and his enemy. When Nikolai rescues a panda and her child, he is living out the highest role of a thoroughly good human being. Serene watercolors of a Chinese landscape set the tone for the quiet meditation on the meaning of life.

  Stone Soup                                                                     Hardcover $16.95

Muth has taken this old tale and transplanted it from its traditional European setting to China. The tricksters are no longer hungry travelers or soldiers but Buddhist monks. Their goal in fooling the villagers is not to fill their own stomachs but rather to enlighten them about the happiness that comes from sharing. Muth's characteristic watercolor illustrations, with their striking use of misty hues contrasted with bright primaries, are expertly done and convey a distinct sense of place.

  Zen Shorts                                                             Hardcover $16.95

Beautifully illustrated in two distinct styles, this book introduces readers to a Zen approach to the world, wrapped in a story about three siblings and their new neighbor, a panda. One by one, the children visit Stillwater, enjoying his company and listening to him tell a brief tale that illustrates a Zen principle.
