The Ohio Fourth Grade Proficiency Tests and Achievement Tests
The Fourth Grade Proficiency Tests were first implemented in March 1995 in all Ohio public schools. The purpose of the tests is to measure levels of fourth grade competency standards as determined by the state in the areas of writing, reading, mathematics, citizenship and science. The Proficiency Tests are now being phased out and replaced by Achievement Tests - see the schedule below.
Results are used to determine additional instruction and intervention that might be needed. While teachers at Indian Hill Elementary School do not "teach to the test," we give students instruction and opportunities to practice the format of the questions often seen on the test. In other words, as teachers work through the fourth grade curriculum, they use activities and review questions that are similar in type to those asked on the tests.
Listed below are sections for each of the Proficiency tests. Each section offers information on what topics are covered on that test, how that test is scored, how we prepare the students for that test, and what parents can do at home to help their child. There are also links to sites of interest for each subject area. You may also wish to explore the link to The Ohio Department of Education Web Site .
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your child's teacher, our school's counselors, Mrs. Linda Mehas or Mrs. Sally VonLehman.
