BROOMBALL GAME RULES FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL

1. Captains decide which team gets the ball first by: paper, rock, scissors.

2. Games are approximately 7 minutes.

3. Captains keep track of points earned during class: 3 for win 2 for tie 1 for non-win
(if captain fails to write down the score, the team will only receive 1 point per game)

4. At end of each game, captains go to board and locate the place of the next game.

5. The broom must be an ordinary household, straw broom.

6. Any violation of the rules listed under violations will result in a warning: the second time a person is given a warning in one game he is ejected from that game.

7. The only non-violation penalty is off-side. Offsides is when a player on the attacking team is entering the attacking zone (inside the blue line) and a player on his/her team is already inside that zone. There will then be a face-off just outside the blue line.

8. VIOLATIONS- resulting in a whistle stopping play and a warning issued to the player are described in the following terms:

a. tripping ---any intentional tripping with the broom or leg

b. elbowing --- flagrant use of elbow to impede an opponent.

c. checking -- any intentional hitting of another player along the boards or in the center ice area.

d. slashing--- any swinging of the broom with the intent of hitting another player.

e. high sticking---hitting someone with or swinging the broom above the knees.

g. throwing the broom --- any throwing of the broom will be a violation.

h. holding the ball --- anyone except the goalie who closes his or her hand on the ball will be in violation.

9. Points are counted as one (not two).

10. Any questionable call can be taken to the team captain for a ruling. If you know an infraction has been committed, then do what is right. Paper, rock, scissors is the last resort when the captains cannot agree.
