EXERCISE TOLERANCE: Factors such as fitness level, health, age, and developmental level of individual participants must be considered.
WARM-UP: The body should be properly prepared just before a vigorous exercise session.
COOL DOWN: The body should slow down gradually from a session of vigorous exercise.
OVERLOAD: An exercise session must be conducted at a level vigorous enough or intense enough to cause changes.
PROGRESSION: The intensity, frequency, and/or duration of each exercise session must be increased over a period of weeks and months to continue to show improvements.
SPECIFICITY: The type of exercise engaged in and the particular body parts involved must be selected to meet the needs of the specific component of physical fitness to be developed.
REGULARITY: Exercise sessions must be conducted at regular intervals daily, weekly, and throughout the entire year to maintain or advance value gained from any physical fitness program.
NUTRITION: The body requires appropriate quantity and quality of foods and a balance of caloric intake with exercise.
SLEEP AND REST: The body requires appropriate quantities of sleep and rest at regular intervals.
HARMFUL SUBSTANCES: substances such as tobacco, alcohol, and drugs will decrease the bodys capacity to perform its minimum normal functioning and do physical activity successfully.
RECOVERY: The body requires an interval of time and periods of rest and sleep to recover from a vigorous exercise session. The amount of time needed for recovery is less for the physical fit person.
SETS: total number of repetition executed each time at an exercise station
REPETITIONS (reps): doing an exercise one time.
ABOVE HEAD: The area above the neck.
BOUNCING OBJECT: An object that rebounds/springs back from a surface
CATCH: Use of body parts and/or implement to gain control/possession of an object
DOMINANT: The side of the body that takes the lead in activities (i.e., writing, eating)
IMPLEMENT: Catching equipment used to aid the catch and reduce the shock of impact (i.e., a glove, a mitt)
IN-FLIGHT/FLY BALL: A ball that travels through the air without contacting the ground surface
LARGE BALL: Any ball 6" or larger in diameter
MOVING: Change or causing to change place or position
NONDOMINANT: The side of the body that does not take the lead in activities
OBLONG OBJECT: An object that is egg shaped and longer in one direction (i.e.,football, rugby ball)
REBOUND: The action of an object springing back upon impact with another object or surface
ROLLING OBJECT: An object that is moving and remains in contact with the surface
SHOULDER HEIGHT: The area extending from the neck to the upper joint of the arm
SIDE OF THE BODY: The area right and left of center
SMALL BALL: Any ball less than 6" in diameter
STATIONARY: A position that permits limited movement; one step from the initial position
TRAP: Stopping or gaining control of the ball by use of a foot or one or both legs
VERTICAL SURFACE: Being perpendicular to the horizon; upright (i.e., wall)
ALTERNATING: To perform in turns--every other one
BOUNCING BALL: A ball that rebounds/springs back from a surface
DRIBBLE: To propel a ball with a series of light taps/pushes with the hand or foot or with an implement while maintaining possession
IMPLEMENT (STRIKING): A piece of equipment held in one or both hands and used to stroke or impart a blow to an object (i.e., field hockey stick, baseball bat, tennis racquet)
IN FLIGHT/FLY BALL: A ball that travels through the air without contacting the ground surface
LATERAL: An arc parallel with horizontal surface
MOVING: Change or causing to change place or position
MOVING BALL: An object that is rolling/bouncing/in flight
OVERHAND: Striking an object by bringing the hand forward and down from above shoulder level
OVERHEAD: Made by hitting the ball above the head
PENDULUM: An arc perpendicular to the horizontal surface
PUNT: A kick in which the ball is dropped from the hands and kicked with the instep before it reaches the ground
ROLLING BALL: A ball that is moving and remains in contact with the surface
SIDEARM: Striking an object by bringing the hand forward parallel to the ground with the wrist even with or slightly below the level of the hand
SPECIFIED DISTANCE: A designated measurement of space
SPECIFIED TIME: A designated measurement of duration
STATIONARY: Not moving, still or fixed base (within one step of the starting position)
STATIONARY OBJECT: A fixed position of an object (i.e., ball on tee/ground)
STRIKE: To hit or kick an object with hand, foot, or with an implement held in one or both hands
SWING: A stroke delivered with one or both arms swept in an arc. The swing can be lateral or in pendulum.
UNDERHAND: Striking an object bringing the hand and/or the arm forward in an arc below the level of the wrist.
BOUNCING PATTERN: An object that rebounds/springs back from a surface
CHEST THROW: A throw that is made by holding the ball in front of the chest with two hands extending the arms quickly and snapping the wrists to push the ball out and away from the body
OVERHAND THROW: made with the hand brought forward and down from above shoulder level
OVERHEAD THROW: Made by holding the ball above the head with both hands and snapping both hands forward at the same time
SIDEARM THROW: Made with the hand brought forward relatively parallel to the ground and the wrist even with or slightly below the level of the hand
THROW: To propel an object (as a ball) through the air by a forward/upward motion of the hand and arm.
UNDERHAND: With the hands or arms moving forward in an arc below the level of the waist.
