Giving back to others for what we have is one of our most important values. A complete education is one that seeks an understanding of others in different life circumstances from our own. Our students have had a long tradition of being involved in helping the neighboring communities. All students must complete at least 60 hours of community service as part of their social studies and graduation requirements.
Indian Hill requires that all of our students put volunteerism into practice in order to make an impact in the community. Community Service has already been very successful with other schools, with students completing thousands of hours of volunteering and learning valuable life lessons along the way.
Hour Requirements
Every student needs to complete
60 hours of service before graduation. At least half of the hours need to be
White - volunteering for a charity or non-profit serving the underserved. Half the hours can be
Red - volunteering for Indian Hill School District.
These hours must be completed outside the school day.
To be considered for National Honor Society students need additional hours of service: sophomores need 30 hours (includes the 10 freshman and the 10 sophomore hours). NHS Junior candidates need 50 hours (includes the 10 freshman, 10 for sophomore, and 20 junior hours). Contact NHS advisor, Mrs. Imrie,
[email protected] for details.
Any community service performed in the summer months must be submitted to
x2VOL by October 1. All community service hours must be completed and by mid-May.
Hours needed are: - Freshmen and Sophomores: 10 hours per year (at least 5 White, no more than 5 Red)
- Juniors and Seniors: 20 hours per year (at least 10 White, no more than 10 Red)
Again, National Honor Society members need additional hours.
What are White vs. Red hours?
Student service hours are classified as white or red.
Red hours are on the IH campus, e.g. working a school event, such as timing a track meet, Spring Fling, school book fairs. coaching IH sports, or selling concessions at an athletic event.
White hours benefit people outside your local community and/or provide broader experiences that help in understanding societal problems and the role of the non-profit sector.
Hours are counted as White only if the organization is a charity or non-profit. Ideally, these are meaningful experiences that should expose you to new people and places and help you learn more about community needs beyond your own school and neighborhood. They are usually performed for a social service agency like the Free Store Foodbank, Matthew 25 Ministries, or Ronald McDonald House. For White hours ideas, visit

x2VOL
Indian Hill uses an online tracking and reporting system for all service hours called
x2VOL. Students will register and receive training on
x2VOL at the beginning of the school year. If you’d like to get a head start, you can watch the two following videos:
First Time Registration How Do I Log in Hours? This system will allow students to view their own hours over all four years and centralize the information. With
x2VOL, students can enter their service hours online at any time. They can check for any volunteer opportunities and sign up for them, receive reminders about the opportunities and print a service hour log that can be used for college applications.
For those who are volunteering over the summer, please keep track of your hours and make sure that you have your supervisor’s contact information or a signed document. After you have registered, x2Vol will then contact your supervisor in order to verify your hours.
